The neighborhood does have some panhandlers but I think it is full of charm. Great metro access and great access to Rue St Denis - the main artery in French Montreal. Spend some time walking up this street toward Marché Jean Talon. It's a great area. I got married in Montreal last spring (and we are Americans living in Chicago) and we put together a guidebook for our visitors that compiles our favorite spots as determined by 10+ visits over the years.
