I value Marriott points a lot more than Hilton points and also more generous with late checkouts and upgrades. Other than that I like Hilton.
Hilton mid-tier is worth a lot more and a lot easier to obtain. You can get gold or diamond for practically free (actually if you use all the benefits on the Surpass card you end up getting paid to be diamond) and you get breakfast with gold status at Hilton.
I have gold status at Marriott due to the Am Ex benefit and don't notice any real special treatment other than I don't have issues with a late check out (Hilton is stingy with late check outs at most properties). But I don't expect much from Marriott since I only stay at their properties about four times a year and only have the status through a credit card.
You are going to have bad stays with any chain if you're a frequent travellers and I wouldn't let one or two bad stays with a chain make me jump ship.
If you want to go with a program that treats their elites great jump ship to Hyatt. I love how I am treated as a Hyatt globalist. Only issue is that Hyatt doesn't have properties in a lot of locations I go to.
