Don't know if it would work if rechecking bags after CBP though. You might have to put bags on the conveyor that will deliver them to the domestic baggage claim area, then go upstairs to Delta's check in area in the middle to recheck them.
You can drop bags and turn around and exit. I've done it when have had multiple hour layovers.
