My guess is this will create a new line, the kiosk line, when checking in. And, as picky as some of us are, we would have little to no chance of getting the upgrade we want using this process. For the airlines this process of checking in online is OK most of the time. If you already have a seat assigned, you know exactly what you are getting and getting the BP online is great. With a hotel room you need to see (or be told) what you are getting. But, if this reduces the lines great.

Walmart and Home Depot have installed these self checkout lines. It has not made any difference to the customer's waiting time, it just allows the store to have less employees working.
