Canopy by Hilton Zagreb City Centre {HRV}

Of the three Hilton properties in Zagreb this is closest to the old city though not exactly in the most salubrious part of the town. The building used to be a chocolate factory and guests receive a bar of Kraš chocolate as a welcome gift. The hotel is about 20 minutes walk to the Cathedral, 30 minutes to St Mark’s Church and under 10 minutes to the train station and the central bus station where direct buses from the airport arrive. There is a brand new shopping mall right next door (actually part of the same building) and it looks like the area may appear less run down in the near future.

I have only stayed at one other Canopy property before (in Reykjavik) but they share some eclectic features such as elevator call buttons hidden in a bookcase and the reception desk which is just a table with a laptop.There are bright orange bicycles guests can use and an afternoon happy hour with nibbles/drinks available to all guests.

I wanted to stay here for two nights but after changing my plan for visiting Plitvice Lakes and cancelling my original booking I was unable to book another night at the Canopy. So I stayed at the DoubleTree the night before, checked out and walked a little over a mile to the Canopy. Despite arriving well before noon the room was ready. The room was similar to one of the rooms I had in Reykjavik but there was no view from the window except for a wall of another building.

Instead of plastic bottles the hotel provides glass bottles for guests to refill from water stations by the elevators

Kraš chocolate - not made on the premises anymore

I found these in the room when I got back in late afternoon

Breakfast was ok but compared to what I had in Reykjavik it was disappointing. Afternoon nibbles and drinks were also underwhelming and it certainly wasn’t worth coming back for. I checked the restaurant menu which seemed pricey compared to the menu at the DoubleTree (OXBO restaurant).

Despite all the negatives I like the Canopy concept. Another nice touch is the Departure Lounge which I also came across in Reykjavik. After checking out they give you a keycard to access the basement with lockers and showers with plenty of towels, etc. You can store you luggage, spend a whole day sightseeing and have a refreshing shower before going to the airport.
