It's not annoying by the way. Once I took an inflight call, then I asked my seatmate if she was even aware I was on the phone. She was not, and was surprised that calling was even possible. The engine roar muffles the sound of your voice to your cabinmates - but not to your caller.
I've had officemates dial into conference calls from flights, although they just listen in.
On newer planes like the 787, A350, and A320neo, the engines are quiet enough that voices are much more noticeable. I have flown on the A350 only once but I could hear every conversation above a whisper in my portion of the cabin.
