This is how it should work, IMHO, on airlines that decide to pursue the bid to upgrade strategy.
I hit a sweet spot a few years ago when MH were in the doldrums and it seemed they just needed money through the tills. £200-£300 for Y to J on already cheap Y fares. Long weekend in SE Asia? Yes please. That was clearly an aberration and would/should not be sustainable long-term.
