This is my experience also, typically for a non-prepaid stay. If I use the app to checkout, I often do not get the invoice by email and have to message the hotel (using the app) to request a copy sent to my email. For prepaid stays, the updated invoice is sent the minute I check out using the app.

Generally I stop by the front desk since most of my stays are not pre-paid, and I need the invoice for accounting purposes. However, if there's a line, or if I'm in a rush to catch a shuttle, etc., I will check out using the app and deal and hope that the invoice gets emailed to me.
