Which hotel are you staying in? PDX has a teensy downtown- other than 22nd/23rd (which is easily reachable by the streetcar), you can walk all around downtown with no problem. And yes, the MAX goes from the airport right to Pioneer Courthouse Sq, which is pretty much the center of downtown. Most of the hotels are a few blocks away from there.
