Isn't the battery needed as part of the bags location tracking system? I really don't know how these things work but if the location tracking tag requires a battery to maintain it than removing the battery would turn off the location tracking tag, wouldn't it?
Perhaps AC doesn't care at all about you tracking your checked baggage. Some might argue that they don't care about your baggage at all.
But it sounds like they care about overheating batteries causing fires in the the baggage hold.
