does Macbook Pro($4500) purchased in Japan need to be declared when returning to US?

a family member lost her old Macbook Pro while traveling in South Korea. she either left it on a tour bus or at a restaurant. it was old and very dented, so it wasn't

When she got to her next destination in Japan, she asked a local friend to order a new Macbook Pro for her. It was around USD$4500.

when she returns to the US next week, does she have to declare it? If so, will she end up having to pay duty on it?

not sure if this makes any difference, but she already managed to put a big 2-inch crack on the upper right of the screen, as well as a nasty dent on the right edge from dropping the new Macbook Pro in a hotel lobby.

any advice appreciated.
