e.g. HKG-AMS on CX, that would/may be available to any Oneworld ffp (BA, QF, QR, AA etc). Availability is not always the same within an alliance.
Some ffp's are tending to dynamic awards, with no award charts/fixed cost (like DL)
Been reports of AS not being happy with some newbies. Some ffp's require you to be a signed up member, for say 90 days, before an award
It's weird that they would not be happy about newbies and award travel because that's sort of what they signed up for when they agreed to let Chase and Citi transfer to them.. right? Maybe it's the ones that didn't get on board with that, that are more pissed off.
