I'll be flying from SFO to YUL (AC Economy standard) in late Nov/early Dec for holidays with my SO. A work trip has come up that would require to fly to DCA the next day. Obviously, I would like to avoid getting on a flight back in the direction I came from, less than 12 hrs after landing at SFO. While a change fee and new flight would probably be the easiest on my return leg, I may not be able to be reimbursed through my company unless I use their travel Agency.

My question is - can I cancel my return leg from YUL to SFO and get travel credit (minus the change fee) to use for the next year? This would allow me to book my flight from YUL - DCA - SFO with my company, wile getting some credit back. How would I go about this (online, phone)? Thanks!
