There are many threads on this but in brief summary, the upper deck in CW on a 747 is a vastly superior experience to CW on a 777 (regardless whether LHR or LGW).
However, I would probably always choose to fly into SNA rather than landing at LAX and then dealing with the potentially traffic-fraught drive to Orange County. Likewise, departing from SNA (with the exception of the lounge) is a considerably more pleasant experience than departing LAX in my opinion.
