I currently have two reservations for next month with BXP1s (a JFK-LAX from J to F, and an OGG-DFW from Y to J), and
both have the TOD upgrade option (but both are >$700 in my case). I'm not worried about it. I've used 20k BE points worth of BXP1s in the past couple years (not all on myself) and the ticket never goes through the same reissuing process as normal AA ticket changes do. I used to have trouble at the airport if there was IRROPS and the paper certificate had not been collected yet, etc., but now with the electronic vouchers I haven't had any trouble at all.
