Since buddy pass riders are going standby, IMO it would be better to avoid checked bags if at all possible. This will give more flexibility and minimize hassles and waiting--for instance, if you're not able to get onto a flight but have already checked a bag, how and where do you retrieve the bag? What if you want to try to switch to another flight that's departing soon and might have more space?
