If I can get the refund, I can then book my updated itinerary afresh. This will be cheaper than paying for the amendments on the return.

I would be careful with the words used when you ask for refund. You must talk about "cancellation" not "time change".
And argue EC261 (read it before).
Not sure what are the original and proposed flights. But AF might propose you the later AF1565 with a short connection in CDG. You would have to stick to your guns and insist that thi sis a cancellation triggering article 8. Don't get into a discussion of the why you refuse the change. . Good luck.
