I dropped AAA years ago* and can only recall one situation where I called for roadside assistance, although it was a fairly boring case of a dead car battery. This was over a year ago, so unfortunately I forget which credit card's benefit I used

but it's probably all contracted out as Diplomatico says. I don't remember my wait being inordinately long either (maybe 30 minutes? I do know it was ~9am on a workday) but could easily depend on day/location/etc.

I would keep AAA no matter what simply to avoid having to waste endless hours at the DMV.
*not to hijack the thread into "is AAA worth it" but 100 miles is a higher tier of membership above the base level, right? ISTR when I did have a AAA membership this is the level I had because I had a mildly unreliable car and often took road trips in the range of 200-300 miles from home that weren't always near major cities.
But with Google Maps etc. for trip planning, and credit cards/auto insurance also offering roadside, I didn't really see the value anymore. One covered incident could make up for several years' worth of fees, sure, but... like any other form of insurance you have to estimate the probability of a covered loss and how much of a hardship it would be to bear the cost yourself. This will differ for everyone's own personal situation of course.
Also pretty sure I have not set foot in a DMV in over 6 years since I can do my renewals online...
