I'm a heathen who uses his fork in his right hand and knife in his left. I know that's very gauche of me but I find it very difficult to cut up my food with knife in my right hand. So more often than not the fork and knife wind up on the incorrect side.
For right-handed people it should be easy and natural to use a knife with the right hand though. OTOH for us left-handed folks it's supposed to be more of a challenge. Yet we learn. Just like, apparently using chopsticks with one's left hand is quite gauche. Again, I learned using my right hand.
