I’d avoid the PH Aviara altogether. It’s an upscale hotel stuck inland in a golf course and a bunch of tract home McMansions. Traffic on I-5 between San Diego and Carlsbad can be a huge PITA, so I’d suggest staying in San Diego proper or maybe San Diego and a night or two in La Jolla (HR Aventine) for the sea caves etc with the kids. Also, as others have said, the Andaz really isn’t a hotel suited for kids, it’s more for the 20-something hipster crowd looking to act like they’ve got money to spend on a hotel without actually staying at a real upscale hotel.
