T60 at AKL is plenty of time even at the busy morning times without bags. It never takes more than 40 minutes in the security line which is really the only pressure point.
Though how does the airline know the next one way flight you have departing that airport is the return for this journey? You might have a flight with another airline they don't have access to. Given that they don't have access to other airlines systems you right it's "not that complicated" it's impossible.

Given the fines for flying people who don't meet visa requirements the airline wants to make sure you have the return flight within the visa window, so if you get turned around they can show the process correctly followed and due diligence.
