Flew MCO-SEA-NRT a few weeks ago, and while checking in on the app I verified the passport info by using the image function (you take a picture of the scannable portion of the passport). After that, my passport now showed as verified both in the app, the website, and on the boarding passes. My wife (didn't scan her passport) was called by the GA at MCO, and when I asked if my passport needed to be verified the GA said no, showed verified in the system. Might be a way to avoid the physical scanning all together!
