Eh, $h1T can happen in irrops regardless of what booking class you're in, did you not call AA or talk to an agent to get it straightened out and rebooked in business?
I'm guessing you were auto-rebooked in economy because no options were available in business, not because AA's systems were confused by your booking code, but who knows.
In any event, for international if you're talking long haul business class then sticker upgrades to 'R' class are not even an option, so again this is a complete non-issue.
