Having never stayed at any of these hotels myself, does this seem to be on the right track?
I take my young children to San Diego a few times a year and our favorite is the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. It's close to the airport but not downtown (so easy to drive to areas around the metro SD area), walking distance to Sea World and has nice pools with water slides, etc. YMMV, of course...
