Have you done this (as above)? To request seat assignments, please contact our Air Tahiti Nui Reservations Office at least 72 hours prior to departure at (877) 824-4846.

No seat assignment is not than unusual with many world wide airlines.

Have you asked AA about the cost to upfare to PE?
Post 5 indicate AA codeshares cannot participate in at the gate counter upgrades Y to PE for a fee
