Yeah, she uses a VPN.

I have a China Unicom HK SIM card. I used to be able to get transit directions on Google Maps when they provided them. Since that stopped (like 1-2 years ago), I've just been using the maps in the stations. My wife doesn't really use Baidu for transit directions in her home town (which has no metro system). We'll usually either drive, or take the buses, and she'll read the schedules at the bus stations to figure out which bus we need to take. As for whether Apple Maps works, I'm not sure. Both of us use Pixel/Android.
