Also, note that stopovers may cost up to $100 each way. For example, if you're flying a discounted business class flight, you would have to pay $100 for stopovers more than 24 hours. See

Now your company may have more special fares that do not cost extra for stopovers.
This isn't always true. Many times adding a stop over on the way BACK is free (in practice). Singapore is a premium destination so he might not be able to find space, but you can frequently add free stop overs when flying NA -> Asia (I've been doing to MNL and PVG from YVR for the last 3 years)
