CX performs a passport/ID for all passengers. If you check-in with an agent, the agent swipes your passport and enters any additional information (eg visa) so this is seamless.
If you don’t check in with an agent, you will be stopped at the boarding gate and they will need to confirm/enter/swipe your travel document details at that point. If you have lounge access, you can ask the lounge agents to do the ID check so you aren’t inconvenienced at the gate.
This is standard procedure for flights to all destinations, at least ex-HKG.
