SSSS is used for extra gate security on inbound international flights (I've had it twice leaving Heathrow) – there is some target percentage of passengers that must be checked at the gate. Getting SSSS at your international departure prevents you getting TSA-Pre on later connecting flights.

Agents cannot remove SSSS from the BP, but on the later, connecting flight they can restore TSA-Pre. To do this, an agent needs to uncheck you in, delete and re-enter your KTN and then check you in again. Most do not know how to do it, so it is useful to be able to guide them through it. I've heard you can also do it through the twitter team while you are in the air.
