I flew down to MIA from JFK on AA today, with TS Gaston not all that far off the S, Carolina coast. I've flown this route many times in the past, nearly always following the coastline, but today we followed a line that was far inland, and we were quite far to the west of MIA as we started our approach to land.

That said, I have also flown out of MIA while a tropical storm was very very close by and already raging in South Miami Beach about 10 years ago...power even went out at the airport for a couple of minutes til the generators kicked in. Just west of MIA is where it cleared up nicely.
