I ran into this recently at an RC property. Since it was a resort with a hefty 50.00 daily resort fee, we complained. We had left hotel at 630 AM for a day hike, and came back at 3PM to sit by the pool and relax, and found the pool chairs gone, and a sign saying private event. No prior notice.

Initially the resort didn't seem interested in helping out, so I decided to go for a swim even while they were setting up the buffet line for the event. Magically they offered a fully comped evening at the restaurant.

Turned out to be a great evening. Chef prepared food for us without even asking. It was delicious.
