Recently my experience (mostly domestic flights) has been that at LHR, EDI, ABZ, they just call 2 and 3 together or very close and everyone just goes.

The best solution is to just fly a bit more and become silver and then don’t have to worry about being in group 3!
Unless my eyes have been deceiving me recently the line for Group 2 & 3 at some gates in T5A is the same. Therefore a mixed Group 2&3 line and no additional benefit during board for Group 2 over those in Group 3.

If you are worried about overhead space. My personal solution has been to get to the gate early and join the queue of others in Group 2&3 who are ignoring the instructions to remain seated. That way you’ll be towards the front and not have to worry about pushing past. I dislike doing this but until something is changed to stop the practice of queueing before boarding is announced, I feel the need to join in and secure space in an overhead close to my location.
