I might have been lucky so far, but waitlisted bookings in full F or J have always cleared for me on BA. Even for bookings made only a couple of days prior to departure on what appeared to be very full flights. Status certainly helps. So, as others have said, if you are Gold and the flight is 6 weeks out I am pretty sure you'll be fine GrahamClarke.
I've never not cleared a waitlist either - even when trying to do an SDC when the earlier flight is full (although I still feel a little twinge of guilt from the flight when a positioning CC member ended up on a jumpseat)! I would expect as a Gold that the OP would be fine. I have been told a number of times that I've gone to the top of the list which I assume means there is a list which is then prioritised
