If you end up in San Diego I would suggest the SAN-LHR flight which I have taken several times. The drive to LAX is nasty although I know many people who drive to LAX from here due to the flight choices available and the cost. The SAN-LHR flight leaves around 8 pm and I find the airport to be very quiet by the time I go though the TSA line to catch the flight.
