The only explanation I can think of is he saw you just getting ready for sleep and thought to try to sneak that joke in before you fall asleep, somehow he thought it would be funny. I mean it was funny to him, he was laughing, lol...
Or maybe he wanted to give you a story to tell, lol...
It would make more sense if it was very early in the flight and you were still awake, but saw you getting ready for sleep, but still bold...
