That is a loss, but it's far easier and less costly to replace than trip insurance. My auto insurer offers comparable roadside assistance for $1.50/mo, and AAA with a longer towing range is $150/year. On the flip side, trip insurance quotes I've received end up in the "5% of trip cost" value, and I buy business class tickets, so a single $3000 ticket is break-even versus an AAA policy. Heck, Delta wants $17 to protect a ~$300 domestic itinerary.
I have the fanciest version (of three, IIRC) of AAA coverage and pay less than $150 per year, but I suspect that the annual fee depends on your local club.
