The relation of room rount and luxury is not compelling, but I believe itīs easier to run a luxury with less rooms than many. If a hotel has 300 rooms itīs very hard or impossible every doormen, concierge or receptionist calls you by name. This said we tend to classify many small sized as boutique and not luxury or so. Is there perhaps a minimum count? I think itīs also hard to provide all necessary service with 5 or 10 rooms. Interesting is also a Concept with different houses (as others said before) like FS Athens or Schloss Elmau.
I think newer hotels are often bigger as they are more easy to operate them profitable. Nevertheless there are also excamples for new hotels in the range of 50 to 100 rooms.
Some of my most ultimate and favorite luxury experiences are tiny compared to the hotels mentioned in this thread. For example, Ett Hem in Stockholm or Villa La Coste in France. I think both have less than 30 rooms. What about Amangiri?
