My experience with Asian carriers varied....Asiana clearly doesn't care as all they want to do is tag your bag with the cabin baggage thing, Singapore weighs your bag, but I've gotten away with up to 8kg and the check-in agent literally advised me to put a couple of heavy items in my personal item to get it down to 8, Thai forced me to check it. I've occasionally been able to wave off any attempts to get me to check it by telling them there's a laptop in the carryon. With all three carriers there was no weighing of any kind at the gate.
