Why would you do this? Just book online and apply the upgrade online. If, for some reason, the upgrade disappears between those two steps you always have 24 hour free cancellation.
The upgrade certs are fare restricted. most of the fares on aa.com are the "low" ones and are excluded from eligibility by the cert.
not sure if you can buy the excluded fare online and have meeting services then re-price/re-ticket for you before applying the cert, though.
