This fiasco started because YOU WERE LATE. You are lucky that you got the first bag checked through on your flight. There's no external damage on your bag. You can't prove that you didn't screw something up in your pique to jamb stuff into the second bag. You may get something from the airline but you shouldn't hold your breath. Think of it as a leaning experience...
