Were liquids packaged inside a ziplock bag? I always do so, and can’t recall anytime bag contents were ruined, even if some contents spilled (inside the ziplock bag).
I bet I could throw away 4 pounds of stuff and not even miss it, if it saved me $200.

I just wish that I was so very busy and important that I have no free time over the course of 72+ hours to pick up a phone (I hear you can even do that from a taxi/uber now!) to call the airline and express my displeasure that a bunch of my companion's stuff got ruined, and I'm catching hell for it.
