Not tried checking bags on domestics for a few years, but I was always denied when just presenting my BA card and asked for proper ID.

ID is not normally asked for if you can check in online, but on rare occasions it doesn't work (and neither will using a SSCI machine) so you have to go to a person, and the person will ask for ID.
