Experienced the same thing on LHR-INV back in August, during weather delays around LHR. Captain did a great job keeping passengers updated throughout the delay and invited people to come up front to chat/take pictures.

Yes, I've seen this several times on UA over the years. Sometimes they will go through the F cabin and personally introduce themselves.
