Room type on hotel door. Why?

I have just stayed at two hotels in a row that feel the need to label the doors of rooms that are above the basic level rooms. For example, my current room has a plate saying 'Grand Executive Room'. The former room said something more generic like 'Suite'. My question is why? Who is this for? Presumably the hotel staff knows which room is which. The guests will know which room they are in because they either paid for that room type, or were upgraded and presumably told about their upgrade at check-in. (And if not, they will surely notice a few moments later when they open the door.) Is it for the people who booked the basic level rooms just so they will be reminded that they could pay more and get a room with a name-badge? I mean, I just genuinely don't understand what/who this is for and am curious if it is fairly common or not. It's not the first time I have seen such a thing, surely, but the only chain that I noticed doing this frequently was Radisson Blu with the 'Business Class' label on those rooms. Besides that, are there some chains that do it more than others? Is there some historical purpose for it? Just curious as it seems a bit odd to me and personally, I would not have it that way.
