Well, I guess we'll disagree about the "well lit" part. Yes, the area around Union Square is more crowded and bustling, but I don't think that means the area around the LM is not well lit (or in any way unsafe).
The LM is actually more convenient to a number of SF's finest/most iconic restaurants (e.g., Quince, Cotogna, COI, Perbacco, Tadich Grill, etc.) than the hotels in the Union Square/Westfield/SOMA area—those areas also have some great restaurants, but the LM is not lacking in the food department. The LM is also closer to the shops at Embarcadero Center. And it's not like the LM is far from Union Square; it's just not in the middle of it (which might be a good thing).
