I think issues of "relative 'safety'" are more about insecurity and false perception. There are roughly 6-12 blocks separating the Le Meridien, JW, Westin St Francis, RC, Marriott Marquis, Palace, Park Central, StR, and W hotels.
I think we all see it as ridiculous to assume that such a small area has some major differences in crime--because it doesn't. It's just about people feeling better about an area they know or prefer rather than there being any substantiation for their unfounded fears of a nearby area or one they don't know as well.
The vast majority of crime in San Francisco involves property. Tourists and business travelers aren't likely to suffer at all from that. You can see the overall rates of total crime (property and violent crimes) in a convenient map:

Then you check out the fact that overall crime rates have been falling in San Francisco even as everyone perceives and fears there is more crime (there isn't):

But there are more homeless. It's prejudice and fear of the homeless that drives this paranoia.
Oops. The facts stand in stark contrast to the fears of insecure suburbanites and country folk who visit SF and see diverse populations and poor and homeless people for the first time--and freak out unnecessarily.
San Francisco has a homeless problem. San Francisco does not have a violent crime problem at all. So relax, people, and enjoy the beautiful city by the Bay.
