Again - I fly AA out of DEN. UA certainly offers far more nonstop flights out of DEN than the 8 destinations that the combination of AA+BA does. I don't choose to be "captive" to UA's DEN hub. Most of the time I fly AA - and take a connection. Sometimes I fly WN or DL or UA when that makes sense. Sometimes the destination requires a connection no matter what airline I fly. But the vast majority of my flights on AA.
You choose to fly the the directs AA offers out of your hub airport - even thought there are (connecting) alternatives available. You've made the - probably logical -
choice to fly the most direct, convenient routings.
No such thing as "Hub captive"
