I always, as soon as ticketed, call reservations and remove my upgrade so I can sit next to my wife. Never had a problem with this. The upgrade request does not even show when I view the reservation online or the AA app.

We also book aisle and windows seat when traveling together. If somebody does sit in the middle seat, they are always happy to get the aisle or window.
