I really have no idea what you guys are experiencing but I am very curious... I passed through NRT connection 3 times in the last 10 days... As you deplane, signs point you to "international connection"... there is a door with a security guy checking your boarding pass, and if it's DL, he will let you through, which is the boarding area. Mine was CI, so he told me to go through international connection and pass through security, along with several other people. Obviously this involves going downstairs to catch the bus.
We pulled into a gate and got off the plane in the same area one would board. Much like a domestic USA flight. There were no signs to the security etc as we were already in the terminal and could walk to duty free/skyclub, etc.
