agreed on disappointment although the various upheavals and sensible parenting means he is well conditioned to disappointment these days
he will likely be far more excited about the Shinkansen. I don’t expect “flight deck visits” will be even a faint possibility there!!
Be careful about spring as that's cherry blossom season and again, flights and especially hotels can be expensive/full.
Fall can be pleasant in Japan with nice colored leaves in some areas. Tokyo itself has a lot of parks and trees.
ADDED: BTW, FFers here who fly in premium cabins would take the long nonstop flight for the flat beds, etc. but in coach someone might prefer a reasonable connection to get off the aircraft, stretch legs, and perhaps buy a snack in the airport.
